A sé titular de Ponto Polemoniaco, sufragânea de Neocæsarea, mencionada por Ptolomeu (V, 6) como um porto no Mar Negro (Euxino); também é referida em outros documentos geográficos antigos, mas sua história é desconhecida. Procopius ("De bello gothico", IV, 2) nos diz que a cidade era de certa importância e que foi fortificada por Justiniano. Ele a chama de Rhizaion, e assim é denominada nas "Notitiæ Episcopatuum". Originalmente foi uma sufragânea de Neocæsarea, depois uma arquidiocese "autocéfala", e finalmente uma sé metropolitana; as datas dessas mudanças são incertas. Com a diminuição do elemento cristão, a sufragânea tornou-se um simples exarcado. Hoje, restam não mais que 400 gregos entre os 2000 habitantes de Rizeh, como os turcos chamam a cidade. É a capital do Sanjac de Lazistão na Vilayet de Trebizonda e exporta laranjas e limões. Le Quien (Oriens Christianus, I, 517) menciona três bispos: Nectário, presente no Concílio de Niceia, 787; João, no Concílio de Constantinopla, 879, e Joaquim (metropolitano) em 1565.
A titular see of Pontus Polemoniacus suffragan of Neocæsarea, mentioned by Ptolemy (V, 6) as a port on the Black Sea (Euxine); it is referred to also in other ancient geographical documents, but its history is unknown, Procopius ("De bello gothico", IV, 2), tells us that the town was of some importance and that it was fortified by Justinian.
