Um escritor, nascido em Montemôr, província de Coimbra, Portugal, por volta de 1520; faleceu em Turim, em 26 de fevereiro de 1561. Embora de nascimento português, Montemayor ocupa um lugar proeminente na história das letras espanholas. Pouco se sabe sobre sua vida. No entanto, é informado que ele não era um homem com formação universitária, não tendo sequer conhecimento de latim.
A writer, born at Montemôr, province of Coimbra, Portugal, about 1520; died at Turin, 26 February, 1561. Although of Portuguese birth, Montemayor occupies a prominent place in the history of Spanish letters. Little is known of his life. We are informed, however, that he was not a man of university training, being not even acquainted with Latin.
A obra que lhe conferiu fama é seu romance pastoral "La Diana", publicado, segundo relatos comuns, em Valência, em 1542, mas pensado por outros, a partir de alusões no próprio trabalho, que foi publicado após 1554, provavelmente em 1558 ou 1559. Este livro, que por muito tempo serviu como modelo para romances de seu tipo, é escrito em bom espanhol, e nele o autor descreve certos incidentes de sua própria vida, entre outros, um infeliz romance. As partes escritas em verso não são tão meritórias quanto aquelas escritas em prosa. O autor promete uma continuação que nunca apareceu. No entanto, três outras "Dianas" surgiram, que pretendiam ser continuações da obra de Montemayor. Uma, de Alonzo Perez, um médico de Salamanca, que afirmava que Montemayor lhe havia confiado seus planos para terminar a obra, apareceu em 1564 e foi um fracasso. As duas outras, de Gaspar Gil Polo em 1564 e de Jerónimo de Tajada em 1627, foram mais dignas de elogio.
The work which has given him fame is his pastoral novel "La Diana", published, according to common report, at Valencia, in 1542, but thought by others, from allusions in the work itself, to have been published after 1554, probably in 1558 or 1559. This book which for a long time served as a model for novels of its kind, is written in good Spanish, and in it the author describes certain incidents in his own life, among others an unfortunate love affair. The portions written in verse are not as meritorious as those written in prose. The author promises a sequel which never appeared. Three other "Dianas" appeared, however, which purported to be continuations of Montemayor's. One by Alonzo Perez, a physician of Salamanca, who claimed that Montemayor had entrusted to him his plans for finishing the work, appeared in 1564 and was a failure. The two others, by Gaspar Gil Polo in 1564 and by Jerónimo de Tajada in 1627, were more deserving of praise.
A "Diana" desfrutou de grande popularidade e levou a muitas imitações por autores famosos, notavelmente "A Arcadia" de Lope de Vega e "A Galatea" de Cervantes, e diz-se que Shakespeare baseou seus "Dois Cavalheiros de Verona" em um episódio de "La Diana". Passou por várias edições tanto na Espanha quanto fora dela. Existem seis traduções em francês, duas em alemão e uma em inglês, esta última obra de Bartholomew Young (Londres, 1598). Montemayor também deixou uma série de poemas líricos, publicados em 1554 sob o título de "Cancionero", e reimpressos em 1562, 1572 e 1588. Estes também são escritos em espanhol, mas não são de mérito particular.
The "Diana" enjoyed great popularity and led to many imitations by famous authors, notably "La Arcadia" of Lope de Vega, and "La Galatea" of Cervantes, and it is said that Shakespeare based his "Two Gentlemen of Verona" upon an episode in "La Diana". It went through many editions both in and out of Spain. There are six French, two German, and one English translation of the book, the latter the work of Bartholomew Young (London, 1598). Montemayor has also left a number of lyric poems, published in 1554 under the title of "Cancionero", and reprinted in 1562, 1572, and 1588. These are also written in Spanish but are not of any particular merit.
