(PREFECTURE APOSTOLIC OF THE NORTHERN SOLOMON ISLANDS)
Estabelecido em 23 de maio de 1898, por separação do Vicariato Apostólico da Nova Pomerânia, inclui as Ilhas Ysabel, Choiseul, Bougainville e todos os ilhéus sob protetorado alemão (ver PREFEITURA APOSTÓLICA DAS ILHAS SOLOMON DO SUL). Em 1897, as ilhas foram colocadas sob a jurisdição do Monsenhor Broyer, Vigário Apostólico de Samoa, e em 1898 formaram-se em uma nova prefeitura sob Monsenhor Joseph Forestier, que reside em Kieta, na Ilha Bougainville. Em 1911, a missão continha: 3 igrejas; 3 estações; 10 Padres Maristas; 5 irmãos leigos; 7 irmãs da Terceira Ordem de Maria; 2 catequistas samoanos; 5 escolas católicas, com 140 alunos; 2 orfanatos; e algumas centenas de católicos. Os missionários maristas pertencem à Província da Oceania, cujo superior reside em Sydney, Nova Gales do Sul. A febre é muito prevalente na missão, e a maioria dos padres que foram para a ilha em 1898 foi levada pela doença.
Established on 23 May, 1898, by separation from the Vicariate Apostolic of New Pomerania, includes the Islands of Ysabel, Choiseul, Bougainville, and all the islets under German protectorate (see PREFECTURE APOSTOLIC OF THE SOUTHERN SOLOMON ISLANDS). In 1897 the islands were put under the jurisdiction of Mgr Broyer, Vicar Apostolic of Samoa, and in 1898 formed into a new prefecture under Mgr Joseph Forestier, who resides at Kieta, on Bougainville Island. In 1911 the mission contained: 3 churches; 3 stations; 10 Marist Fathers; 5 lay brothers; 7 sisters of the Third Order of Mary; 2 Samoan catechists; 5 Catholic schools, with 140 pupils; 2 orphanages; and a few hundred Catholics. The Marist missionaries belong to the Province of Oceania, the superior of which resides at Sydney, New South Wales. Fever is very prevalent at the mission, and most of the fathers who went to the island in 1898 have been carried off by disease.
