Santo Agostinho nomeou como seu primeiro bispo católico, por volta de 416, um jovem chamado Antônio, que posteriormente lhe causou muita ansiedade (Ceillier, "Histoire générale des auteurs sacrés et ecclésiastiques", Paris, 1861, VIII, 11 sqq.). Sabe-se que um certo Melior foi bispo em 484 (Gams, (465, col. 3), e a sé ainda existia no século VII (Byzantische Zeitschrift, II, 26). A fortaleza de Fossala completava as defesas de Hipona.
