Um missionário jesuíta português, nascido em Lisboa, 1531; falecido em 1612, na missão de Angola, costa sudoeste da África, cenário dos labores de sua vida. Suas obras literárias consistem principalmente em "Relações" escritas aos superiores da Companhia de Jesus, descrevendo a condição da província tanto sob os aspectos políticos quanto espirituais. Ele narrou em detalhes a vitória dos espanhóis, liderados por Paul de Morales, sobre um exército de negros nativos no ano de 1583. Relatos da conversão de tribos pagãs e dos batismos de reis nativos, bem como tratados sobre os costumes e tradições do povo, são os principais temas de seus escritos.
A Portuguese Jesuit missionary, born at Lisbon, 1531; died 1612, on the mission of Angola, southwest coast of Africa, the scene of his life's labors. His literary works consist chiefly of "Relations" written to the supervisors of the Society of Jesus, describing the condition of the province with regard to both its political and spiritual aspects. He has recounted in detail the victory of the Spaniards, led by Paul de Morales, over an army of native negroes in the year 1583. Accounts of the conversion of pagan tribes and the baptisms of native kings as well as treatises on the manners and customs of the people are the principal subjects of his writings.
